Description
The Telefunken M81 rounds out the brand’s dynamic microphone lineup, built as a companion to the popular M80 rather than a replacement. It keeps the traits that made the M80 a live and studio favorite—low proximity effect, strong rejection of feedback, and a mid-range that stays articulate under pressure—but dials back the top end for a flatter overall response. The result leans toward warmth and density rather than sizzle, which is exactly what you want when a source is already bright or a room is already loud.
That tonal balance makes the M81 a natural fit for FOH and monitor engineers who need one mic that behaves across a rider: it flatters hot vocalists and edgy guitar cabs by smoothing the top, while adding fullness to congas, toms, and brass that might otherwise sound thin through a PA. Its super-cardioid pattern and high maximum SPL rating of 135 dB give it the headroom and off-axis control needed for tight stage plots and loud backline without folding under pressure.
Housed in the same flint-gray body and tri-chrome grille as the R-F-T AR-51, the M81 was voiced to pair with that mic for guitar recording duties, though on a gig it stands entirely on its own as a rugged, do-it-all dynamic. Custom-wound Telefunken T80 transformer and 25mm capsule construction back up its road-ready reliability.
