Description
The Telefunken M81 is a super-cardioid moving-coil dynamic built to earn a permanent spot in your mic locker, whether it’s tracking in the booth or getting kicked around a stage night after night. It followed the M80 — the mic that made Telefunken a household name in live sound — and kept everything engineers loved about it: tight off-axis rejection, an articulate midrange, and low proximity buildup that keeps close-mic’d sources from turning muddy.
Where the M81 breaks from its predecessor is up top. The high end is voiced flatter and a touch tamer, so instead of adding extra sparkle, this mic leans into warmth and density. That makes it a smart choice for sources that are already bright or harsh — aggressive vocals, edgy guitar amps — and equally effective at fattening up percussion, horns, and other thin-sounding instruments that need more meat on the bone.
On stage, that super-cardioid pattern and strong feedback rejection make the M81 a dependable choice for monitor-heavy setups and loud backlines, while a max SPL rating of 135 dB (at 1% THD) means it shrugs off snare cracks, floor toms, and brass without flinching. It’s finished in the same flint-gray body and tri-chrome grille as the R-F-T AR-51, and the two were voiced to complement each other on electric guitar cabinets.
