Description
The TELEFUNKEN M80 was built to move past the boxy, midrange-forward sound that’s become the default expectation for handheld dynamics on stage. Instead, it hands front-of-house and performers a mic with a genuinely wider frequency window and higher SPL headroom, so vocals stay open and detailed instead of getting squashed into a narrow band.
Behind that sound is a low-mass capsule with an unusually thin, tough membrane, letting the M80 pick up nuance and emotional detail in a live vocal that’s typically only associated with studio condensers. The capsule and head geometry are engineered to tame proximity effect, which keeps low-end response controlled and clear even when a singer works close to the grille — without losing the punch, presence, and air that make a vocal cut through a mix. Because the upper midrange stays smooth, you get authority on the front line without inviting feedback problems at monitor-heavy stage volumes.
An American-made, custom-wound impedance matching transformer rounds out the signal path, giving the M80 its distinctive tonal character and helping it translate consistently through different console preamps and monitor rigs — a real plus for touring and rider situations where signal chain varies night to night.
