Description
The Heil Sound PR48 is a dedicated kick drum mic built around a 1.5″ large diaphragm dynamic element, mounted in a vulcanized shock isolator to keep unwanted vibration out of the signal path. A custom low pass filter shapes a +10 dB boost between 50 and 100 Hz, locking onto the fundamental thump of the kick, while a +4 dB lift from 3.5 to 5 kHz brings the beater click forward. Response drops off sharply past 8.5 kHz, keeping stray shell and hardware noise from cluttering the tone. Overall frequency response spans 30 Hz to 8.5 kHz.
For live rigs and touring riders, the PR48’s specs matter as much as its sound: rear rejection of -40 dB at 180° off-axis keeps bleed from adjacent kit mics and stage wash to a minimum, and a rated SPL handling of +148 dB means it won’t distort or fold under the pressure of a hard-hitting drummer or a loud monitor rig. That headroom makes it a dependable choice whether you’re covering a small club stage or feeding a large-format PA.
Drum techs had a hand in the physical design too — the metal housing features a slanted XLR entry point that makes cable hookup faster and less fumbly during changeovers. The mic outputs a balanced 600 ohm signal and is finished in flat black emron with a red grille, giving it a rig-ready look that’s easy to spot in a dark drum riser.
