Description
For engineers who want the 7603’s pristine dynamics but crave a different flavor at the front end, the 7603-XMod delivers. It shares the 7603’s discrete, Class A circuit topology and low-distortion performance, but swaps in Carnhill UK-manufactured input and output transformers — the same lineage that made the 7602-XMod a favorite among users chasing classic British character.
- Carnhill UK mic and line input transformers plus Carnhill output transformer, all housed in mu-metal shielding for magnetic isolation
- Discrete Class A gain stage built for low noise, wide bandwidth, and high dynamic range
- Hi-Z front-panel DI (TRS) with 100KΩ input sensitivity for guitars and other instruments
- Three-band, inductor-based EQ with variable high pass, low shelf, mid, and high shelf — using custom Chameleon-designed inductors
- Selectable 300Ω or 1200Ω mic input impedance for better gain-stage matching, especially useful with lower-output ribbon mics
- 48V phantom power, relay-switched Mic/Line/DI source selection, and a reverse phase switch
- Precision VU meter with calibrated ballistics, switchable between input and output monitoring
- Overload indicators on both input and output, plus a universal on-board power supply
The output stage uses a variable gain design that adjusts input and output levels together, keeping the noise floor down while preserving headroom — a detail that matters when you’re pushing a channel hard on a live rig or tracking a hot source. Between the impedance switching, DI input, and full EQ section, this preamp is built to slot into demanding signal chains where flexibility and tonal character both count. If you already run 7602 or 7603 units on your rider, the XMod gives you another sonic option without giving up the reliability and control layout you know.
