Description
The 7603 sits at the top of Chameleon’s preamp line, built on the DNA of the well-regarded 7602 but pushed further with all-new transformer designs developed entirely in-house. Custom nickel laminations and bobbin assemblies give this unit extended bandwidth and very low distortion, while mu-metal housings around the mic, line, and output transformers keep RF and stray magnetic noise out of the signal path — a real consideration for FOH racks living near lighting dimmers and wireless combiners.
Inside, a discrete Class A gain stage feeds a three-band, inductor-based EQ with variable high-pass filtering, low-frequency shelving, mid control, and high shelving — enough shaping to tame a problem source or add character without reaching for outboard processing. Mic input impedance switches between 300Ω and 1200Ω, letting engineers voice a preamp differently mic-to-mic or venue-to-venue, and the Hi-Z TRS DI lets you patch a bass or keyboard straight in without an external box.
Practical touches matter on tour: relay-switched selection between mic, line, and DI inputs keeps switching clean and repeatable, a reverse-phase switch sorts polarity issues on the fly, and the calibrated VU meter with real ballistics gives a fast, trustworthy read on input and output levels at a glance. 48V phantom power covers condenser mics, and the universal on-board power supply means one unit travels anywhere without a separate step-down brick.
